World Manufacturing Production (Report)

Published on: Wednesday, 15 Jun 2022

Each quarter, UNIDO Statistics publishes a report summarizing current growth trends in world manufacturing production across countries and major sectors. The report evaluates production data, collected and published by National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in UNIDO’s member states. This is the first statistical publication by UNIDO to be released on quarterly data. While a lot of economic research is based on detailed annual statistics on business structure, other international data users, especially policymakers and businesses, require more recent assessments of production trends.
While the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continued into the first months of 2022, they are gradually weakening, although with seasonal, regional and sectoral differences. The distribution of raw materials and products in global supply chains, e.g. in motor vehicle production, continues to pose a major logistical threat. Given the global dependence on fuel, essential foodstuffs and other goods imported from the Russian Federation and Ukraine, the military offensive in Ukraine has become a major source of global uncertainty. In the first quarter of 2022, global manufacturing production registered a year-over-year output growth of 4.2 per cent. Industrial economies reported a similar annual output growth of 4.1 per cent, following a stable increase of 3.6 per cent and 6.1 per cent in the last two quarters, respectively. Other industrializing economies registered a year-over-year output increase of 5.1 per cent.

This report presents estimates for the first quarter of 2022 as well as revised estimates for the fourth quarter of 2021.
