Traditionally, in the CIS countries, the industry was and is a key driver of the social and economic development. This becomes especially obvious now, when these countries are getting deeper involved in the process of globalization of the world economics. The country borders become more and more transparent for the industrial activities and the labor resources become more and more mobile. Even the mainly agrarian countries in the region feel the influence of the powerful industrial economies.

UNIDO is recognized as a custodian agency for maintaining database for indicators under SDG 9, monitoring the the progress and reporting to Inter-Agency and Expert Group on SDG indicators (IAEG-SDG).
