Mining & Utilities Statistics Database

MINSTAT - 2023 edition at the 2- and 3-digit level of  ISIC Revision 3
(available online )

The UNIDO Mining & Utilities Statistics Database at the 2- and 3-digit level of ISIC (MINSTAT) contains highly disaggregated data on the mining and utilities sectors for the period 1990 onwards. Comparability of data over time and across the countries has been the main priority of developing and updating this database. MINSTAT offers a unique possibility of in-depth analysis of the structural transformation of economies over time. The database contains seven principle indicators of industrial statistics. The data are arranged at the 3- and 4-digit level of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 3  and 4 pertaining to the mining and quarrying and electricity, gas and water supply sectors, which comprises more than 20 mining and utilities industries and sub-industries.

When the MINSTAT database system was created, the first priority was the data requirements of cross-country economic analysis. Much of the work consisted in developing a set of data that were comparable and consistent across countries and over time.
The database contains following indicators of industrial statistics:

  • Number of establishments.
  • Number of employees.
  • Wages and salaries.
  • Output.
  • Value added.
  • Gross fixed capital formation.
  • Number of female employees.

The MINSTAT database contains time series data from 1990 onwards. Data are available for country, year and ISIC at the 2- and 3-digit levels of ISIC (Revision 3), which comprises more than 20 mining and utilities industries and sub-industries. All value data are originally stored in national currency at current prices. The system allows for data conversion from national currency into current US dollars using the average period exchange rates as given in the International Monetary Fund International Financial Statistics (IFS). In support of the statistical data, relevant metadata information is collected from national data suppliers and OECD, which is available to users in a highly flexible form.

The current edition of MINSTAT covers:

Reference period: 1990-2015

Number of countries: 113(8 in the most recent year)

*Coverage in terms of years, as well as data items, may vary from country to country depending on data availability.

MINSTAT data are compiled in collaboration with OECD: Data for non-OECD countries are collected by UNIDO, while those for OECD member countries are collected and provided to UNIDO by OECD for inclusion in the database. The data are mostly those reported by national statistical authorities in response to UNIDO country questionnaires or UNIDO/OECD joint country questionnaires. They have been supplemented with data published in national statistical publications as well as UNIDO estimates.

Note: In recent years most countries that report their industrial statistics to UNIDO have made a switchover from International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 2 to ISIC Revision 3 and many of them also to ISIC Revision 4. These countries now provide their industrial statistics that are based on or related either to ISIC Revision 3 or to ISIC Revision 4.
